Our Favourite Applets - TOP 5

by Team Appkettle September 08, 2017

What is IFTTT?

IFTTT is a free web based service that enables you to create connections between different products and services into a sequence, called Applets. These Applets can then be used or 'triggered' in your everyday life to make your life more fun, efficient and productive.

An example of an IFTTT applet, is combining the IFTTT services for location and your Appkettle so that it will heat up and be ready for you when you arrive home. This Applet works with your phone's GPS to 'trigger' an Appkettle action to turn on when you reach a certain distance from home, it's brilliant!

For help on creating your first IFTTT Applet please see our IFTTT help page here or continue reading below..

Our Favourite Applets TOP 5

A 'Magical' Button

Button IFTTT Service

Applet summary:

This Applet uses the IFTTT 'Button' service to magically turn on Appkettle.

Why we like it:

Your mobile devices notification 'widget' screen acts as a button to your kettle from anywhere and anytime!

Pro tip:

What we use it for:

We love all sorts of beverages so we have widgets for 'Coffee', 'Green Tea' and 'Rooibos' all ready to go from our phone's notification screen.

It's 'Hue' Time

Hue time

Applet summary:

This Applet uses Appkettle's Turn on 'Trigger' service to make Hue light bulbs blink.

Why we like it:

It's another way to communicate it's time for a Cuppa with your family and friend's by making the lights blink in certain rooms or everywhere.

Pro tip:

Make sure to select which lights in which rooms you would like your Hue lights to blink and not to make all the lights blink accidentally, if not intended!

What we use it for:

We love using this whilst in our separate offices to tell everyone when someone's making a cuppa, we then share on brew rounds.

How to set this up?

1) Use the Appkettle button Applet here

Or

2) Setup your own

  •  In the IFTTT app select 'My Applets' then the '+' symbol
  • On the New Applet page, select '+ this' then search and select 'Appkettle'
  • On the 'Choose Trigger' page select one of the 'Turn on' options with your device.
  • Back on the New Applet page select the '+ that' then search and select 'Hue'
  • Select your preferred action option, we choose 'Blink Lights' then press 'Next'
  • Select 'Finish', make sure it is 'On' then make yourself a Cuppa and watch your Hue lights go crazy!!
  • Applet Complete. Enjoy.

Three

Location

 Location Applets

Applet summary:

This Applet uses the IFTTT 'Location' service to magically turn on Appkettle when you enter or exit an area.

Why we like it:

You can set an area on your mobile device, that can be used to start Appkettle heating to be ready for when you arrive, this is very convenient and fun!

Pro tip:

Experiment with the area you set in the location map settings so that when you move into an area you have provided enough distance for the trigger to start so that your Appkettle is ready for you when you arrive.

What we use it for:

We use this applet at least twice a day, when we arrive at work and when we arrive home.. there's always heated water waiting for us to make a cuppa. Perfecto!

How to set this up?

1) Use the Appkettle button Applet here

Or

2) Setup your own

  •  In the IFTTT app select 'My Applets' then the '+' symbol
  • On the New Applet page, select '+ this' then search and select 'Location'
  • On the 'Choose Trigger' page select 'Enter area'
  • Back on the New Applet page select the '+ that' then search and select 'Appkettle'
  • Select either 'Turn on Appkettle' or 'Turn on Appkettle by Favourite'.
  • Select your required Temperature/Favourite and/or keep warm then press 'Next'
  • Select 'Finish', make sure it is 'On' then get ready to be warmly greeted home next time to your perfectly heated Appkettle.
  • Applet Complete. Enjoy.

Two

Alexa Unleashed

'Alexa trigger green tea'

 Alexa Unleashed

Applet summary:

This Applet uses the IFTTT Alexa service to enable using voice activated 'phrases' with Amazon Echo and Fire devices to turn on Appkettle to any beverage temperature (60 - 100ºC), your app favourites and also include your preferred keep warm preferences.

Why we like it:

You can use Appkettle's fully featured IFTTT service with Alexa to set your favourite beverage temperatures, favourites and keep warm preferences, using a simple phrase e.g. 'Alexa Trigger Coffee', 'Alexa Trigger Green Tea', 'Alexa Trigger Earl Grey'. It's simple, effective and quite brilliant, we use this service several times a day at both home and work.

Pro tip:

Set up Applets linked with Alexa and Appkettle for all your favourite hot beverages. Then simply trigger by voice the perfectly heated temperature for your next beverage, whilst also keeping it warm (if required). A smart and more useful way to use Alexa with your Appkettle.

What we use it for:

This is used a lot in our office and at home, we have several phrases linked to specific hot beverages on our brew board and then we just voice activate the one we want!

How to set this up?

1) Use the Appkettle button Applet here

Or

2) Setup your own

  •  In the IFTTT app select 'My Applets' then the '+' symbol
  • On the New Applet page, select '+ this' then search and select 'Alexa'
  • On the 'Choose Trigger' page select 'Say a specific phrasethen enter a phrase e.g. 'green tea'.
  • Back on the New Applet page select the '+ that' then search and select 'Appkettle'
  • Select either 'Turn on Appkettle' or 'Turn on Appkettle by Favourite'.
  • Select your required Temperature/Favourite and/or keep warm then press 'Next'
  • Select 'Finish', make sure it is 'On' then get ready to astounded by the fact you can ask for precision temperatures for any hot beverage using your voice with Alexa.
  • Applet Complete. Enjoy.

Drum roll please...

And our favourite IFTTT service is....

1

Google Assisted Fun time!

'Ok Google make me an Oolong'

G: 'Yes your majesty, anything for a quiet life!'

 Google Appkettle IFTTT Applet

Applet summary:

This Applet uses the IFTTT Google Assistant service to enable using voice activated 'phrases' with Google home or android devices to turn on Appkettle to any beverage temperature (60 - 100ºC), your app favourites and also include your preferred keep warm preferences.

Why we like it:

We like using Google Assistant because it can do everything that Alexa's service can do with Appkettle but it also offers a little bonus, you have 3 ways to say any voice activated phrase, for example 'Ok Google I'd like a green tea please', 'Ok Google green tea time', 'Ok Google green tea it up!' and the really fun thing is you're able to set 'any' google response back to you!! It's really fun and can be very amusing!!  e.g. Google response: ' Yes your majesty, i'll pop the kettle on right away!' - Haha..  Try it.

Pro tip:

You don't need to type in Ok Google into the phrase boxes just enter the phrase you would like to say to activate your specific Appkettle heating preference.

What we use it for:

Daily use in our office and at home from Google home, Android devices and when we want a good laugh! It's great.

How to set this up?

1) Use the Appkettle button Applet here

Or

2) Setup your own

  •  In the IFTTT app select 'My Applets' then the '+' symbol
  • On the New Applet page, select '+ this' then search and select 'Google Assistant'
  • On the 'Choose Trigger' page select 'Say a simple phrasethen enter a phrase e.g. 'pop the kettle on', then enter a response in box lower down then select 'Next'.
  • Back on the New Applet page select the '+ that' then search and select 'Appkettle'
  • Select either 'Turn on Appkettle' or 'Turn on Appkettle by Favourite'.
  • Select your required Temperature/Favourite and/or keep warm then press 'Next'
  • Select 'Finish', make sure it is 'On' then get ready to be laughing in hysterics when google says your 'appropriately' selected response :)
  • Applet Complete. Enjoy.
